Autonomous Vehicle Coming to Clearwater

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 15, 2021

Autonomous Vehicle Coming to Clearwater
AVA, as she is called, will be in Clearwater for a 3-month pilot

Clearwater, Fla  AVA is coming to Clearwater. An autonomous vehicle, which seats up to eight people, will be in Clearwater for a three-month pilot thanks to the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) and the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority (TBARTA), who are funding the trial run. (click here for photos & click here for video

AVA, which stands for Autonomous Vehicle Advantage, has already made trips in downtown St. Petersburg and Dunedin.

In Clearwater, AVA will operate along South Gulfview Boulevard, next to the world-famous Clearwater Beach.

The hours of operation for AVA will be 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday until February 27
th, 2022. The service is free to riders.

Managed and operated by Beep, AVA uses an array of sensors outside of the vehicle providing a full 360-degree view of the environment. An on-board shuttle attendant, or copilot, serves as an ambassador to the riders, educating about the technology and overseeing the high-quality passenger experience
Riders will be able to enjoy the views of Clearwater beach, along with easy access to shops, restaurants, and all the city has to offer.

“We are beyond excited for the Clearwater community to experience AVA,” said Brad Miller, Chief Executive Officer of PSTA. “We invite people of all ages to enjoy a ride and leave with a better understanding of how technology can help enhance safety and provide clean-energy transit solutions. Programs like AVA can transform transportation.”

“TBARTA is proud to partner once again with PSTA in providing financial support for this project,” said David Green, Executive Director of TBARTA. “AVA not only represents the future of autonomous transportation,
it is also a great example of what we can accomplish when we work together.”

The functionality of the shuttle is enabled by a safe, pre-determined planned route. AVA is equipped with multiple onboard LiDAR sensors and GPS tracking to ensure the path is maintained during operation. The vehicle performance is monitored by an onboard shuttle specialist as well as Beep’s Global Command Center located in Orlando, Florida.  The vehicles are 100-percent electric, and react 10 times faster than a human can, while never getting distracted from the roadway.

“The AVA project is the latest example of how PSTA is leading the way on innovative, sustainable transportation options. We’re excited to bring this driverless technology to North County and offer more people a chance to experience AVA,” said Pat Gerard, Chair of PSTA Board of Directors.

“Continuing our partnership with PSTA only furthers our commitment to safely test autonomous shuttles in a variety of environments. Launching AVA in the City of Clearwater along Gulfview Boulevard will provide residents and visitors a safe, sustainable, and reliable means of connecting to the Beachwalk hotel area and the Bayway district. Our 100-percent electric shuttle service with PSTA will help further preserve the beachside and everything the community has to offer” said Joe Moye, Beep CEO.

The autonomous shuttle will operate at a maximum speed of 15 mph as part of a 3-month pilot. Riders will be required to wear a seatbelt and use a face covering while on the shuttle. Passengers can expect processes and procedures onboard that align with best practices for ridesharing and transit according to federal guidelines such as frequent cleaning procedures and a modified seating capacity. (
see Beep’s COVID response page here). Passengers are limited to one round trip. To learn more about AVA’s route in Clearwater click here.

PSTA Board of Directors Unanimously Approve Purchase of 60 All-Electric Buses for the Five-Year Bus Replacement Plan for $80 Million

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 8, 2021

It’s Official: PSTA is Going Green
PSTA Board of Directors Unanimously Approve Purchase of 60 All-Electric Buses for the Five-Year Bus Replacement Plan for $80 Million

St. Petersburg, Fla –Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) officials announced the purchase of 60 electric buses over the next five years, the latest step in PSTA’s ongoing mission to transform the fleet clean and green by 2050. Electric buses are more efficient, better for the environment, and will have improved health outcomes for the communities they serve. Click here for photos/videos of electric buses.

PSTA’s electric buses will operate systemwide with the first of the 60 new buses expected to hit the road in 2024. PSTA already operates six all-electric, green buses. Today’s announcement comes after PSTA unveiled four electric depot bus chargers in June of 2021. Last month, the PSTA Board of Directors approved electric bus purchasing contracts with the four leading electric bus manufacturers in the country. It is the first all-electric bus consortium in the State of Florida.

“PSTA is determined to deliver on the promise of a zero-emissions fleet by 2050,” said Chief Executive Officer Brad Miller. “Last month, the Biden administration signed into law the largest investment public transit has realized in US history to improve transportation options and reduce greenhouse emissions for millions of Americans. PSTA is leading the way for our region to meet our green goal.”

Each electric bus is recharged one of three ways: overnight charging, regenerative braking, and on-route charging stations. The battery range averages 200 miles or about 14 hours of operating time on a single charge. PSTA will save about $20,000 a year in diesel fuel costs with each electric bus.

“Pinellas County is pleased to support PSTA’s transition to zero-emission buses by modernizing the fleet over the next five years,” said Pat Gerard, Chair of PSTA’s Board of Directors. “Through this electric vehicle investment, we are ensuring that Pinellas County residents benefit from cleaner air as we move toward a more sustainable, carbon-free energy system.”

Electric buses cost less to run than diesel, are easier to maintain, and each electric bus reduces 135 tons of carbon emissions from the air per year by providing public transit services as an alternative to personal vehicle use.

“This is exactly the kind of investment St. Petersburg needs and deserves. It also solidifies PSTA’s status as the transit agency in our region most dedicated to protecting the environment,” said Nicole Roberts, Car-Free St. Pete. “Modernizing the PSTA fleet through renewable energy will have far-reaching impacts that can help address overdue challenges of social equity and climate change.”

By eliminating diesel exhaust emissions, particulate pollution, and pollutants that contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, they improve the air quality in our communities.

“PSTA is taking major steps toward fulfilling its aspiration of a fully green fleet by 2050,” said Miller. “More zero-emission buses, as well as charging infrastructure, will reduce emissions and improve air quality that impacts public health locally, while contributing to an overall effort to combat climate change and sea-level rise.”

First Completed SunRunner Station Unveiled

The station includes stained glass art by Catherine Woods

St. Petersburg, FL – Today, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) celebrated a milestone with the region’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. PSTA and city leaders unveiled the first completed SunRunner station (Click here for photos/Click here for video). The station located at the corner of 1st Avenue North & 5th Street in St. Petersburg, along with many others on the line, features unique, locally inspired, stained-glass art from St. Petersburg artist, Catherine Woods.

“I am incredibly excited for this next phase of the SunRunner project. These stations represent a huge step towards a new day in transportation for our city and our region,” said Mayor Rick Kriseman. “My thanks to Catherine Woods for her creativity and for reminding us that St. Pete is truly a city of the arts. I also want to thank Brad Miller, as well as the board and the staff of PSTA for making today possible, and for leading the way on the SunRunner.” Being able to incorporate public art into the design of the bus shelters I think in a win-win,” said PSTA CEO Brad Miller. “It enhances the esthetics and appeal of the SunRunner and it’s also a great way to recognize and complement the region’s growing arts community.”

The SunRunner features semi-dedicated lanes, limited stops, and safety enhancements for riders including level boarding platforms and crosswalks. The 10.3-mile line will connect St. Pete Beach, the best beach in the U.S., with downtown St. Petersburg. It will include 16 stops with buses running every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes in the evening.

“The SunRunner is a new form of mass transit this area has needed,” added Board Chair Pat Gerard. “We know how hard it can be to find parking at the beach or downtown St. Pete and thanks to the SunRunner, you won’t have to deal with that frustration anymore.”

The SunRunner features free Wi-Fi, onboard bike space, and multi-door boarding. You can easily prepay with your smartphone or other devices, so you won’t need to search for your fare while your hands are full of beach gear. The SunRunner will get you to the beach and back fast – and comfortably. It is expected to open in the Summer of 2022.

Leadership PSTA Donates Bus to Reach St. Pete for Mobile Market

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 29, 2021

Leadership PSTA Donates Bus to Reach St. Pete for Mobile Market

Mobile Market Bus Expected to Launch in January 2022

Saint Petersburg, FLA – Members of the Leadership PSTA (Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority) team this evening officially donated a bus to Reach St. Pete, a local non-profit, to address the growing issues of food and basic necessity insecurity as a result of the pandemic. Click here for the media kit including broadcast-quality video.

Reach St. Pete is committed to preventing and alleviating homelessness, low-income, and at-risk situations by bridging the gap between people and resources – the perfect partner to operate a retrofitted PSTA bus as a mobile market, bringing food and other resources to underserved communities across Pinellas County. More than 135,000 Pinellas County residents struggle with food insecurity. By working together, PSTA and Reach St. Pete share the goal of reaching our neighbors and making an impact in their lives.

“At PSTA we continuously strive to make a difference in our community. As a transportation agency, we pride ourselves on getting to know our riders and taking them where they need to be,” said Brad Miller, Chief Executive Officer of PSTA. “We often hear and see their struggles firsthand and are excited to start this great partnership with Reach St. Pete, and what better way to help our community than to bring them a busload of supplies that they may need.”

“At Reach St. Pete we strive to not only provide access to basic necessities for those in need, but we strive to show up for our community and build relationships,” said Alexia Morrison, Executive Director of Reach St. Pete. “This partnership with the PSTA and their generous donation of a city bus to make our Mobile Market a reality will change lives in our city. Not only does it bridge the physical gap for those without transportation, but the financial gap for those who may not be able to afford fresh food. This is one of many steps to improve health equity in Pinellas County.”

“We know that there is a food and basic necessity insecurity issue in Pinellas County, so why not have a bus that comes directly to our neighborhoods to help those in need,” said Pat Gerard, PSTA Board Chairwoman. “I am proud of the partnership we have created with Reach St. Pete to work together to find a solution for these problems.”

The mobile market is expected to make its debut around Pinellas County in early 2022. It will have supplies such as food, diapers, hygiene products, and more.

New Clearwater Transit Hub Gets Wave of Support

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 16, 2021

New Clearwater Transit Hub Gets Wave of Support

Local leaders join forces to solve Pinellas County’s most pressing transportation need

CLEARWATER, FLA – The plan for a new state-of-the-art transit center downtown is gaining speed. Dozens of local leaders came out today in Clearwater to show their full support for the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority’s (PSTA) new Clearwater Multimodal Transit Center (click here for renderings) to connect downtown riders to area beaches and beyond.

“We are here today in agreement that this is our most pressing transportation need in Pinellas County,” says Brad Miller, Chief Executive officer of PSTA. “Downtown Clearwater is one of the busiest transportation hubs in Tampa Bay. It’s time we move forward to meet the needs of our community and help grow our local economy in an environmentally responsible way.”

“This project has been talked about for over a decade and today it is almost a reality. The exciting part of this new hub is the ability to add an express bus route from Tampa International Airport to Clearwater Beach,” said David Allbritton, Board Member of PSTA and Clearwater City Councilmember. “We’ll make it easier for people to reach Clearwater and our beautiful beaches. In a time where multi-mobility is so important, this will be a game-changer for the economy of our downtown. It’s a big win for our community, local business, and future redevelopment plans.”

Many businesses, local governments, and representatives have sent letters of support and commitment for the new transit hub. The center would be built on a vacant lot at the corner of Court Street and Myrtle Avenue. It will be “multimodal” and specifically designed to integrate PSTA buses and trolleys with other forms of transportation. The plan includes 16 bus bays, bicycle and scooter storage, ride-sharing connections, ADA boarding requirements, and a “green” design including solar panels and electric bus charging stations. The plan also provides flexibility for future passenger rail services.

It’s a much-needed replacement for PSTA’s 40-year-old station at Park Street, which is functionally obsolete and in need of upgrades for more than a decade. The center serves 14 routes and 2,300 riders each weekday: it is unable to accommodate all the current routes, forcing some bus operators to pick up and drop off passengers on side streets. In addition, newer hybrid and all-electric buses cannot fit under the old, leaky roof.

PSTA has requested a $25 million grant from the Biden Administration’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program to pay for the transit center. The remainder of the $34 million project budget will be funded by contributions from the City of Clearwater, FDOT, Forward Pinellas, and PSTA. The goal is to have construction begin in spring 2023, with the facility to be completed by fall 2024.
