A New Era of Transit: PSTA Breaks Ground on Clearwater Station

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 22nd, 2025

A New Era of Transit: PSTA Breaks Ground on Clearwater Station

New transit center to double capacity, improve accessibility, and power future-forward mobility

Clearwater, FLAfter more than a decade of planning, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) and the City of Clearwater officially broke ground today on the new Clearwater Station; a state-of-the-art, multimodal hub that will transform the way residents and visitors move throughout northern Pinellas County.

The new transit center is being built on two acres at the corner of Court Street and Myrtle Avenue, directly adjacent to the new City Hall and the Pinellas Trail. When complete in late 2026/early 2027, the Clearwater Station will replace the outdated Park Street Terminal built in the 1980s. The new facility will be twice the size, fully ADA-compliant, and designed to serve more than 2,300 riders daily, including modern electric buses.

“Today has truly been years in the making, and I am proud to say we are finally not just breaking ground, but breaking barriers into a new future that will connect people, places, and possibilities,” said Brad Miller, Chief Executive Officer of PSTA. “Clearwater Station will be a gateway to opportunity, to community, and to a more connected future.”

The groundbreaking brought together city, county, state, and federal leaders to celebrate what is widely seen as one of the most important transit investments in Pinellas County in decades.

“This moment represents more than just the beginning of a construction project,” said PSTA Board Chair and St. Petersburg Councilmember Deborah Figgs-Sanders. “It symbolizes progress, innovation, and vision, and most importantly, it reflects PSTA’s deep commitment to connecting people, improving lives, and creating a more mobile, inclusive future for all.”

“Clearwater Station will complement the investments we’re seeing all across our city from Coachman Park and The BayCare Sound to new affordable housing and our soon-to-open City Hall,” added Clearwater Mayor Bruce Rector. “This beautiful new hub will not only connect people to jobs, services, and opportunities, but also make Clearwater an even stronger destination for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.”

The new Clearwater Station will feature:

🚍 Connections to multimodal services including Uber, Lyft, and PSTA Access

🚍 Covered bike racks and pedestrian-friendly amenities

🚍 Retail space and a coffee shop

🚍 EV charging infrastructure and solar panels

🚍 Real-time arrival and departure information

The site will also include a major public art installation titled The Cloud by artist Matt Niebuhr from The Art Studio at RDG Planning & Design. The plaza centerpiece will feature two parallel, organic-shaped perforated stainless-steel surfaces — one floating above the other — evoking the movement of waves as they glide onto shore.

“Clearwater Station is more than just a transit project. It is a transformational step forward for our city,” said PSTA Board Member and Clearwater Councilmember David Allbritton. “It’s a place where residents and visitors can seamlessly connect to the rest of the region, and a symbol of the perseverance and vision that got us here today.”

The project is made possible through a $20 million U.S. Department of Transportation RAISE grant, with additional funding from the City of Clearwater, FDOT, Forward Pinellas, and PSTA.

Construction will be led by Kokolakis Construction, with design by CDM Smith and HDR. For more information about the new Clearwater Station, click here
