I recently had the opportunity to ride on the exciting new SunRunner Bus Rapid Transit route. As a wheelchair-dependent individual, I'm always concerned about how accessible, safe, and comfortable any new service or location will be. My experience with the SunRunner was excellent! I boarded the bus in downtown St. Pete and rode the complete route to St. Pete Beach. The ramps at both ends were smooth and well-marked. The entrance door was wide and led me directly to the designated wheelchair securement area. These buses have a new system that secures wheelchairs a little faster than the ones on existing buses, and I found that new system to be very secure. The ride was smooth and comfortable. And the views along the route were so nice that I almost wished the rapid transit was less rapid!
Because I am a Clearwater resident, I don't often explore the southern sections of our county. However, my experience with the SunRunner convinced me that I've been missing out on many interesting and (engaging) locations. The SunRunner and several locations along its route now top the list of places I will visit and bring visiting friends and family to see.
Today, I just wish that we could have a similar service in the central and northern parts of Pinellas County as well.
Sincerely,
Gloria Lepik Corrigan, ADA rider
